MELOS is a practical book for the study of contemporary melodies and the development of improvisational skills. The book contains 57 compositions in 12 chapters, thus offering a wide variety of contemporary melodies: from the simple beauty of a familiar tonality to clear lines which reach beyond conventional tonality and create something new.
The melodies both set a task and offer an opportunity to bring the noted thoughts, emotions and movements into an individual flow. Each of the compositions is augmented by a variety of practical exercises. The exercises are part of the preceding composition and their structure is analysed and named. A way to transpose each of these constructive motifs is also suggested: practicing these through the whole range helps to expand ones technical skills, develop melodic listening skills and furthermore, creates a rich cache of melodic components for individual improvisation.
The compositions included in MELOS can be found on the author’s varied CD recordings.
